Monday‘s book swap scores and my gorgeous new flannelette sheets. Love me some food magazines and free books! I was going to go straight home that day but a child I used to teach who had issues with me and major issues herself was on the same public transport as me so I thought it best to stay out of her way. I didn‘t succeed but it turns out she didn‘t notice me which was great as I wasn‘t in the mood to be abused that day. Very cold here in Oz.

Five star read. I couldn't put it down, and stayed up past my bedtime to finish it!

This was a mixed bag for me and probably leaned more toward a so-so. The historical part (Australia, 1860s-1915) was well done and interesting. But I found the writing overall rather stilted and bumbling with dual timelines/stories/speakers. It involves a brother and sister (Michael & Elizabeth) who adopt an orphan (Jane) and give her a chance to develop her math abilities. 75% in, there is a jarring twist as a mystery evolves around Elizabeth‘s🔻

robinb past. There were moments when I felt this would take an even more sinister turn than it did and made me feel off balance. It was a slow starter and overly long and other than Jane I found a disconnect with most of the characters. But for those who enjoy (mostly) Australian historical fiction, it will probably be enjoyable. 3/5⭐️ 3y

Ahh, thank you so much @Rissreads - I‘m actually super pleased to get The Girl In The Painting as I loved it - and I plan to talk about it at my libraries next book talk ☺️ (and it‘s a great book, will reread!) and super excited to see The Boy Who Steals Houses - I love C. G. Drews Instagram (@paperfury) and I recently bought a signed bookplate from her... when I find it - this will become a signed copy!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Looking forward to playing a touch of evil! 😈 and I just noticed a beautiful whale bookmark! THANK YOU! I love it all! 4y

Ripper of a read! I got so absorbed by this particular family secret / mystery that I decided I needed answers more than sleep 😂

Michael and Elizabeth Quinn emigrate to Australia in the 1860s and the book flips between their arrival and much later (1906-1913) when they are well established philanthropic figures - and become the benefactors of young Jane, an orphan and maths prodigy. I loved how the details were slowly teased out.
