Trout, Belly Up
Trout, Belly Up | Rodrigo Fuentes
2 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
In this highly original collection of interconnected short stories, the Guatemalan countryside is ever-present, a place of timeless peace yet also riven by sudden violence. The stories provide glimpses into the life of Don Henrik, a good man struck time and again by misfortune, as he confronts the crude realities of farming life. Over the course of these episodes we meet merciless entrepreneurs, hitmen, drug dealers and fallen angels, all wanting their piece of the pie. Told with precision and a stark beauty, in a style that recalls Hemingway, Trout, Belly Up is a unique ensemble of beguiling, disturbing stories set in the heart of the rural landscape in a country where violence is never far from the surface. Finalist for the Gabriel Garca Marquez Short Story Prize

I was intrigued by this short story collection written by Guatemalan author Rodrigo Fuentes and published by Charco Press, a publisher I hadn't heard of before that I will be following closely. I'm trying to wizz through it before I lose my motivation, because it's not my cup of tea. It's very male and up its own fundament. If someone has recs for Guatemalan authors, I'm all ears!

Pickpick

A low pick for this collection of interconnected stories set in rural Guatemala, all giving a glimpse into the life around Don Henrik. The poverty, crime and corruption gaining a foothold in Guatemala isn't isolated to the big cities and the characters here feel the effects of these issues. It was an interesting but short look at the lives of everyday people. It should be no surprise to you that my favorite was⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick "Out of the Blue, Perla" about a cow that was raised like a dog. I like things a little weird.
