Necessity
Necessity | Jo Walton
"Necessity: "the sequel to the acclaimed "The Just City" and "The Philosopher Kings," Jo Walton's tales of gods, humans, and what they have to learn from one another.More than sixty-five years ago, Pallas Athena founded the Just City on an island in the eastern Mediterranean, placing it centuries before the Trojan War, populating it with teachers and children from throughout human history, and committing it to building a society based on the principles of Plato's "Republic." Among the City's children was Pytheas, secretly the god Apollo in human form.Sixty years ago, the Just City schismed into five cities, each devoted to a different version of the original vision.Forty years ago, the five cities managed to bring their squabbles to a close. But in consequence of their struggle, their existence finally came to the attention of Zeus, who can't allow them to remain in deep antiquity, changing the course of human history. Convinced by Apollo to spare the Cities, Zeus instead moved everything on the island to the planet Plato, circling its own distant sun. Now, more than a generation has passed. The Cities are flourishing on Plato, and even trading with multiple alien species. Then, on the same day, two things happen. Pytheas dies as a human, returning immediately as Apollo in his full glory. And there's suddenly a human ship in orbit around Plato--a ship from Earth.

Hmmm, I'm not actually sure what I thought of this. I was excited to have some narration by Crocus, and it's cool having aliens and recontact with humanity! But wow, I didn't expect this direction.

The last of a trilogy about a project to create Plato's Republic. The Greek Gods are real.

It has a lot of heart. Completely understandable without reading Plato's Republic, which I haven't and have no plans to.

One of my resolutions for 2017 is to keep myself to three library books at a time, since my library system is not very forgiving with long checkouts. This stack is the result of 45 minutes of agonized browsing.

This is the 3rd in this series and I don't know how Walton makes it work (but she does). It all begins when Athena decides to do an experiment : make Plato's republic real and Apollo decides to live there-as a human. There are so many nerds I want to recommend this series to-whatcha waiting for?

Mehso-so

Doesn't live up to the previous books in the series. Has lots of potential for interesting questions and conflicts, but the good stuff was shunted to the side for a boring and too easily resolved hunt for Athene.

It seems to me ... that art can come at philosophical issues sideways, and open the soul to them where otherwise the mind might throw up bastions against the truth.

If you've been waiting until Jo Walton's Thessaly trilogy was complete, your wait is over. NECESSITY is here, and it's got everything. Philosophy! Gods! Aliens! Alien gods! Time travel! Contemplative robots! It's my favourite of the three, but you'll probably want to start with THE JUST CITY and work your way forward so you can watch all these conversations about Plato play out.

teresareads Starting this tonight. So excited! I loved The Just City so much. 8y

This is a big part of why I LOVE time travel. Yay, (fictional) problems!

Went to the pre-launch for the amazing Jo Walton. She's pretty much the smartest person on the planet, and everything she writes is amazing. Also reading was Ada Palmer, for her debut novel, which I also bought because what she read was fascinating.

SusanInTiburon Oo I loved Farthing. I'll look for this one. 8y
CynCruz23 Awesome!! You're so fortunate to be there - Jo Walton is one of the best authors out there PERIOD 👍 8y

minkyb I have spent the past 10 minutes adding books to my "to be read" stack. Is there a limit? At some point will there be a message saying I can't add another title? I'm worried... 8y
