Sing Me the Creation
Sing Me the Creation | Paul Matthews
6 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
This resource book contains over 300 exercises and games for individual and group work in creative writing. Though the book's exercises are intended for group work with adults, teachers of children will encounter many new ideas for the classroom, and individuals working alone will have no difficulty adapting the exercises to their needs. The exercises are designed to develop the individual's and the group's imagination, they are not meant as self-help instruction exercises. Following an introduction which tells how to use the book, gives permission to break the rules, offers suggestions for group practice, and describes the structure of the book, the exercises are grouped under the following broad sections: The Statement; The Question; The Exclamation; The Command; The Hearth; and The Quintessence. Hands down, the best and most inspiring book on creative writing that I have come across. The book contains both individual and group exercises to free up one‘s imagination and get the words flowing. Matthews‘ examination of language and sentence types as they relate to the four elements is fascinating. Full disclosure: Paul‘s writing led me to his courses, and he has become a dear friend & mentor. #LetterS #alphabetgame @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

#writersoflitsy #poetsoflitsy English poet and brilliant creative writing teacher Paul Matthews will be teaching a course in New Hampshire this summer with American poet Patrice Pinette. Group and individual writing, surrealist games, Spacial Dynamics, Eurythmy, and laughter will all play a role in freeing the imagination and enlivening language. Link to course description in the comments. Would love to meet some Littens there!

To lend voice to seemingly inarticulate things is no literary device but a deep human act. It implies intuition -- the ability to know something from the inside. Is that possible? When love participates in knowing, then momentarily we may stand within the verb of a thing, the intention that created it. --Paul Matthews (Sing Me The Creation: Creative Writing Sourcebook, 2nd ed., p.26, available online from Steiner Books) #writing #poetry

DimeryRene Holy Mary. I love this. I just wrote it on my white board for inspiration. 7y

Louise @Libby1 Paul is the best writing instructor I have ever experienced. He helps to free the imagination through humor, movement, group writing, all sorts of things. His workshops are good for the soul. 😊 7y
Libby1 @Louise - that sounds wonderful. Too bad that darn Atlantic is in the way. 7y

#augustphotochallenge #underhypedbooks This is the best resource for inspiration, teaching writing, opening the imagination, etc.! Paul Matthews is the best writing teacher I have ever encountered because he creates an atmosphere of joyful play, in which you encounter language in a whole new way and thus set your imagination free. This revised and expanded 2nd edition is available from Steiner Books. Paul will teach in NH in summer 2017! Hooray!

Bookfaery Have you read it within a group, class, or individually? 8y
Louise @Bookfaery At first, I worked alone with it, then I took a summer course with the author, then worked with a group. Paul is based in Forest Row in England and comes to the States and Canada every couple of years to teach summer courses. They are marvelous courses! He is one of the funniest people I've ever met, and through group and individual writing, Bothmer movement, & exercises like those in this book, he draws out amazing poetry from people. 8y
Louise @Bookfaery I'm not sure if the 2nd edition is available on Amazon yet. It's available from Steiner Books in the US and from orders@booksource.net in the UK. Published by Hawthorn Press. It's worth it to get the 2nd edition, as it is expanded and the layout is gorgeous too. 8y
