The Story of the Milky Way: A Cherokee Tale | Joseph Bruchac, Gayle Ross

“Just as the Beloved Woman had said, the great dog never returned to bother the people. But where it ran across the sky was left that pattern of the stars the Cherokee call Gil'liutsun stanun'yi, 'the place where the dog ran.' That is how the Milky Way came to be.“

I would use this book in my classroom because it is again of a culturally diverse story and would spark a lot of imagination about the stars and space in general, including the galaxy and Milky Way.

“It ran across the sky until the people could see it no longer. But the cornmeal that has spilled from its mouth remained behind as a great band of light across the night sky. Each grain of cornmeal that fell became a star.”

Amazing book on how the Milky Way came to be. Published in 1995, the Cherokee myth is a story of how cornmeal became the stars we see today. Love the connection of the dog to the story and how he scattered the stars. Great illustrations as well
