Four Roads Cross: A Novel of the Craft Sequence
Four Roads Cross: A Novel of the Craft Sequence | Max Gladstone
10 posts | 15 read | 3 to read
From Max Gladstone, the new novel in the series praised by NPR as "sharp, original, and passionate."In "Four Roads Cross," the great city of Alt Coulumb is in crisis. The moon goddess Seril, long thought dead, is back--and the people of Alt Coulumb aren't happy. Protests rock the city, and Kos Everburning's creditors attempt a hostile takeover of the fire god's church. Tara Abernathy, the god's in-house Craftswoman, must defend the church against the world's fiercest necromantic firm--and against her old classmate, a rising star in the Craftwork world. As if that weren't enough, Cat and Raz, supporting characters from "Three Parts Dead," are back too, fighting monster pirates; skeleton kings drink frozen cocktails, defying several principles of anatomy; jails, hospitals, and temples are broken into and out of; choirs of flame sing over Alt Coulumb; demons pose significant problems; a farmers' market proves more important to world affairs than seems likely; doctors of theology strike back; Monk-Technician Abelard performs several miracles; The Rats! play Walsh's Place; and dragons give almost-helpful counsel.

If you want a boring book with boring characters, do not read this book. If you want to read about starlight fuelled magic feuding lawyers epically fighting in the courts over the power/control/freedom of gods and their dominions/powers, read this series. Wow this book is amazing.

It was good to return to the characters and setting from the first book, after an enjoyable detour through the surrounding context of the world; these people and places feel more lived-in than before, and I understand them better. Although I had forgotten that Abelard and Cat were already friends before the first book, oops.
Pardon my bad photo editing. There were moments in this book that struck me unexpectedly, and this was one.

"Meaning," he said, righting their course, "comes from rhyme and rhythm and form. You can't just fill a page with words that have the same definition as the original. True translation requires understanding the associations and contexts of the source language, then shifting all that into the target tongue. The greater the poet, the harder the translation."

I both really liked this book and found it about 100 pages too long. Too slow paced, especially at the end where the tension should have been amping up. Found the entire family plot line pointless, very unnecessary. However I really enjoy the world Gladstone has created and reading the stories in this world and seeing how the world he built works. But man did the end drag for me. Photo by Skizoh

Fantastic. A truly inventive urban fantasy novel with incredible world-building and excellent characters. I really can‘t say enough good about this series, or about this book.

Book mail is the best mail! I realized that somehow I skipped this as I read the series. Had to remedy that situation immediately. For some reason it's only available in hardback so it doesn't match the rest of my set but I'll live I guess. P.s. Check out that cover!!!

An excellent finale to an incredible series! I'm just disappointed that this was the last Craft Sequence book.
