The Ox-Bow Incident
The Ox-Bow Incident | Walter Van Tilburg Clark
5 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
Set in 1885, The Ox-Bow Incident is a searing and realistic portrait of frontier life and mob violence in the American West. First published in 1940, it focuses on the lynching of three innocent men and the tragedy that ensues when law and order are abandoned. The result is an emotionally powerful, vivid, and unforgettable re-creation of the Western novel, which Clark transmuted into a universal story about good and evil, individual and community, justice and human nature. As Wallace Stegner writes, [Clark's] theme was civilization, and he recorded, indelibly, its first steps in a new country.

Even though I bought the paperback back in 1967 as a high school freshman I just got around to reading it. This book set in 1880s Nevada is a taught story about mob justice and a mob mentality that overwhelms a group generally honest men. The parallels to current times in the way some grab hold of an idea and refuse to listen to counter arguments made reading this book 55 years after buying it made it all the more relevant. An excellent read.

This should be on a classic list for college. It reminded me of The Lord of the Flies. Without laws or a governing unit, people can turn into animals. They become a pack. Follow the alpha instead of thinking for one's self. A very strong book with a very strong message. It is not just a western. #USReads #Nevada

I was reading this one periodically throughout the whole #readathon, including during my late dinner of bbq chicken pizza (which I can't remember when the last time i had that). Seems fitting that the book i started the readathon with is also my last completed book. Really enjoyed this day with my books! @DeweysReadathon https://greatmorrisonmigration.wordpress.com/2021/04/25/completed-24-hour-readat...
