Prince Harry
Prince Harry: Brother, Soldier, Son | Penny Junor
3 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
The authoritative biography of Prince Harry by noted royal family biographer Penny Junor, author of Prince William: The Man Who Will Be King and The Firm: The Troubled Life of the House of Windsor. Prince Harry, one of the most popular members of the British royal family, has had a colorful life. After losing his mother at 12 years old, he spent his teenage years making questionable choices under intense international media scrutiny, becoming known for his mischevious grin, shock of red hair, and the occassional not-so-royal indiscretion. As he's grown, he has distinguished himself through military service, flying helicopters for the RAF. He served in Afghanistan and continues to devote himself to his military career. He also follows in his mother's footsteps with charity work--he is the founder of Sentebale, a charity to help orphans in Lesotho, and works with many other charitable organziations to help young people in society and to conserve natural resources. As he reaches his thirtieth birthday, Prince Harry is proving himself a prince of the people. With unprecedented access to the most important figures in his life, Penny Junor is able get the truth about who this mercurial and fascinating royal son really is. A modern biography of a modern prince, this book offers an insider's look at the life of the man who is fourth in line to Britain's throne.

JacqMac This makes me a little sad. But I‘m not surprised. 4y
TheBookHippie @JacqMac I‘m happy for Harry he needs to get out of it and lead his life. The press is never going to stop. It‘s horrendous. I‘m sad too. Necessary step imagine the same press that essentially killed your mum is now after your wife. Heartbreaking 4y
Chrissyreadit I‘m not sure I understand what that actually means. As in do they draw a pay check now? They are still members of the family- and not likely to inherit the throne- so it does not seem like much would change? 4y

TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit no no money and no required public access and no required duties. Their own lives. 4y
melissajayne @Chrissyreadit They do draw a cheque now from the privy purse and they are members of the senior royals, but Charles has indicated he wants to slim down the senior royals even further when he comes to the throne. 4y
TheBookHippie @melissajayne I bet they try to become independent of it all. They are giving up senior royalty yes? In essence quitting as it gets streamlined as Charles wishes and I think makes life better for all. 4y
melissajayne @TheBookHippie that‘s what it sounds like from the two articles I have read. And I‘m not exactly surprised as they would go further down the pecking order once the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge‘s children have their own children in about 20-30 years. 4y
Kappadeemom They will probably end up the happiest of all the Royals 4y
Chrissyreadit @melissajayne @TheBookHippie thank you! I‘m afraid I‘m confused because they are part of the family. I wonder what kind of independent work they will do? 4y
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit charity work I assume run a non profit and maybe she‘ll act again 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y
Scochrane26 I love the Royal family but do wish the press would leave them alone. I‘m not in England, so I don‘t see how much press there is but I know it‘s a lot. 4y

Mehso-so

For someone like me who knew nothing about the royal family, this is a good enough introduction to one of its members. However, there isn't much actual documentation to back up the story. Not that I doubt what is written but a biography should have citations to sources.

Pickpick

Loved this book. Interesting look at his younger years that we usually don‘t see in all the documentaries. I definitely have a much more balanced view of his parents than I did before reading this. It went until fairly recently, and it was nice to know more about his military career. If you‘re into the royal family, Prince Harry, or recent British history, give it a go.
