Mining Memories: Images from Independence Mine State Historical Park
Mining Memories: Images from Independence Mine State Historical Park | Margaret Gaines
1 post
Independence Mine State Historical Park in Alaska contains buildings and machinery that was built and used in the 1930's - 1950's when the it was used to actively mined gold from the mountains towering above it. Photographer Margaret Gaines explored the mine to capture it as it exists today: some intact buildings and some falling apart revealing the machines and materials that kept the mine running.

Yesterday afternoon my bf and I drove out to Hatcher Pass, AK to go on a hike and explore the old defunct Independence Mine. In the 1930s this was the 2nd most productive commercial gold mine in Alaska and functioned at full capacity until the beginning of WW2 when it was deemed an “non-essential” industry during wartime. Much of the old mine has been broken down by time and weather but some of the buildings have been restored.

Reecaspieces Wow! Interesting 5y
