The Queen's Governess | Karen Harper
4 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
The national bestselling author of Mistress Shakespeare delivers the epic tale of Elizabeth I's most trusted companion-a commoner who lived among royals... Katherine Ashley, the clever, beguiling daughter of a poor country beekeeper, catches the attention of powerful, ambitious Thomas Cromwell-henchman for King Henry VIII. Cromwell secures for Kat a place in the royal court, but as a reluctant spy. Plunged into a treacherous game of shifting alliances, Kat is entrusted by Anne Boleyn to protect her daughter, Elizabeth. In the face of exile, assassination attempts, imprisonment, and a romantic flirtation that could cost the young princess dearly, Kat will risk everything-even her own secret love-for her bright, clever Elizabeth.

Mehso-so

I really love historical fiction inspired by what is probably history's most famous (or infamous) dysfunctional family: the Tudors, specifically Henry VIII and his wives and children. As historical facts go, this book seems quite well-researched (thought I didn't find that out until the end, when I read the author's note) but something in the way it was written left me a little cold — despite the intriguing subject matter. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is making me want to watch The Tudors again. In fact, I think I might start right now, and distract myself while folding laundry 😬

Jillsandypants I LOVED the Tudors!! 😍 8y
Elisa @Jillsandypants such an excellent show. However I had forgotten quite how... PG-15 it is 😳 I think I'll have to wait until school begins to watching it! 😁 8y
readinginthedark I haven't seen this one yet, but my husband and I have started watching Reign! Love royalty dramas! 8y
Elisa @readinginthedark I like Reign, but The Tudors is even better. Better costumes, better scripts, less CW and more HBO. But I like Reign because of the focus on the strong female characters!! 8y
readinginthedark @Elisa Ooh! I'll have to bump it up on my watch list! 8y

Back to one of my favorite genres: historical fiction ? I have a soft spot for the Tudor era, especially all around Henry VIII and his wives, so when I saw this for Q9 in a charity shop in Kent, I just grabbed it ?
