More trivia for #eoe #buddyread: Here are photos of Steinbeck‘s real-life mother Olive and maternal grandfather Samuel Hamilton, who both appear as characters in his epic novel East of Eden. Steinbeck said he strongly identified with Samuel, especially his yen for inventions. He referred to his mother, a schoolteacher, as “the strongest woman I ever knew.” Olive was also an avid reader, which she obviously passed on to her son.😉 @Cinfhen 👇🏻

UwannaPublishme In his #eoe Journal, Steinbeck confirms: “All of the Hamilton stories are true! 🤔 He writes: “I can tell all about them now because they are all dead and they won‘t resent the truth about themselves.” 5y
Cinfhen Hmmmmm. So Olive really went up in that stunt plane!!! I thought that part was unnecessary to EoE but I guess Steinbeck was chronicling his family history 5y
Tanisha_A Ooh! Thank you for sharing this. I have read TGoW and OMaM by him, and loved them both. Hope to read this sometime. 5y

bookandbedandtea @Cinfhen I've been wondering why he threw in that story as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with anything. It's neat to learn that he included his family history in this book. 5y
bookandbedandtea @UwannaPublishme I'm growing interested in reading his journals. Thanks for posting these pictures! 5y
UwannaPublishme @Cinfhen @bookandbedandtea Yes! Olive did go up in the plane. Steinbeck says he had a specific purpose for including Olive that will learn soon enough. 🤔 5y
UwannaPublishme @Tanisha_A You must add this one to your list. Once you start, you won‘t want to put it down! 5y
UwannaPublishme @bookandbedandtea These journals are so cool! I feel like I‘m watching him during his triumphs and struggles and listening to his innermost thoughts. 5y
