👓 “A person accustoms himself to what he is, after all, and if he‘s lucky he learns to hold in somewhat lower esteem all other ways of being, so as not to spend life envying them.”

Strong Motion: A Novel | Jonathan Franzen
Mehso-so

Strong Motion is tough to get through even if you're a massive fan of Franzen. The characters are constantly abrasive, cruel, and unfeeling toward one another. The thriller plot isn't strong enough to hold up the action. The moving parts don't hang together terribly well. Still, it's unique in the Franzen canon, has a some really interesting voices going on, and I really liked the way Renee's written.

This is definitely one of my best impulse buys. I was at a bookstore in 2010 browsing for a book to bring on an upcoming trip to Italy and I picked this. I had never even heard of Jonathan Franzen until I brought this to work with me and my coworker told me about The Corrections and Freedom. I know a lot of people loathe Franzen, but I'm a big fan of both his fiction and nonfiction, especially The Corrections. #impulsebuy

DreesReads Me too! I don't get the hate lol. 8y
Simona I don't know nothing about the hate part (you can call me ignorant), but I do love The Corrections and Freedom. Purity is in the TBR pile. 8y
mauveandrosysky @AudreyMorris haha haters gonna hate! 💁🏻 8y

mauveandrosysky @Simona Purity is probably my least favorite, to be honest. 😕 I still enjoyed it, but not as much as his others. 8y
Simona @mauveandrosysky In that case, it will just have to wait a little longer😉 8y
mllemay I have one of his essay collections and I have no words for how much I love it. I enjoy his non-fiction as well, and I'm kind of tired of all the hate. He obviously puts on a certain persona when he's in public and people seem to take that at face-value, unfortunately. 8y
