Is Sex Necessary?
Is Sex Necessary?: Or Why You Feel the Way You Do | E. B. White, James Thurber
3 posts | 2 read
The first book of prose published by either James Thurber or E. B. White, Is Sex Necessary? combines the humor and genius of both authors to examine those great mysteries of life -- romance, love, and marriage. A masterpiece of drollery, this 75th Anniversary Edition stands the test of time with its sidesplitting spoof of men, women, and psychologists; more than fifty funny illustrations by Thurber; and a new foreword by John Updike.

Pickpick

More than 20 years before Charlottes Web, E.B. White published this odd gem as satire after the emergence of sexology in the 1900s from scientists like Freud and others I‘ve never previously heard of. Enjoyed the chapters about explaining sex to parents and male frigidity, shown by illustrations here by James Thurber. Like not love it... had this on my shelf for ages and finally read it as my February #bookspin #doublespin thanks @TheAromaofBooks

Almost done with this oldie. Hilarious at times. Enjoyed the chapter about teaching parents about sex. This illustration caption got me! “It is customary to illustrate sexology chapters with a cross section of the human body. The authors here chose to substitute in its place a chart of the North Atlantic, showing airplane routes. The authors realize that this will be of no help to the sex novice, but neither is a cross section of the human body.”
