Thousand Cranes
Thousand Cranes | Yasunari Kawabata
Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabatas Thousand Cranes is a luminous story of desire, regret, and the almost sensual nostalgia that binds the living to the dead. While attending a traditional tea ceremony in the aftermath of his parents deaths, Kikuji encounters his fathers former mistress, Mrs. Ota. At first Kikuji is appalled by her indelicate nature, but it is not long before he succumbs to passiona passion with tragic and unforeseen consequences, not just for the two lovers, but also for Mrs. Otas daughter, to whom Kikujis attachments soon extend. Death, jealousy, and attraction convene around the delicate art of the tea ceremony, where every gesture is imbued with profound meaning.

I‘m having a hard time finding something I want to read after having immersed myself in Garth Ennis‘s Preacher series for the past few weeks. I will now try this novel as I‘m familiar with the author, and I always find it comforting to settle down with a good book of contemporary Japanese fiction. This novel was recommended to me long ago by #BookCrosser Dunzy, sadly no longer alive. He got me into reading others works by this noted author.

I love my new Kindle case. Anytime they release a new version of the Kindle, it always takes some time for the after market cases to come out. So now I don‘t have to stress about dropping my new Kindle anymore. Yay!

First full book finished in #24in48! Just passing the 3 hour mark 😬 I loved this post-war Japanese drama on love, guilt, family history, and tea.

Pickpick

This is a short story packed with guilt, sorrow, and jealousy, with tea ceremonies weaved in as the major backdrop. I get the same melancholy from The Hunting Gun, but this book deserves better translation; something is just missing somewhere. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Father's life was only a very small part of the life of a tea bowl.”

This beautiful Japanese story uses the classical tea ceremony as the background for the tale of a young man's relationships to two women, his father's former mistress and her daughter.
