Sometimes you stumble upon excellent pairings when reading- Apothic Inferno and Chopin's Concerto 2 in F Minor when reading the last 1/2 of this novella- so good. Try this trip into hell for the 20 year old Gillian and stay with her through the 138 pages - it was a ride! (Trigger warnings for sexual situations and manipulation). And don't forget the wine and Chopin!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Penitent Magdalene by Donatello is one of the most powerful statues I have seen, carved in wood and unsparing in its vision of what the Magdalene might have been. I was repeatedly reminded of this during discussions of the wooden totems in this work- although they are of young, ripe women, this seemed apt.
