The Bear Went Over the Mountain
The Bear Went Over the Mountain: A Novel | William Kotzwinkle
4 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
William Kotzwinkle, the esteemed author of The Fan Man and E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, is in top comic form in this outrageous and uproarious parable featring Hal Jama big black bear who finds a manuscript under a tree in the Maine woods, dons a suit and a tie, and heads off to the big city to seek his fame and fortune. What follows is a riotous magical romp with the buoyant Hal Jam as he leaves the quiet, nurturing world of the forest for the glittering and corrupt world of humans. New York and Hollywood and all that lies between serve as an expansive palette for Kotzwinkle's wickedly funny satiric brush. The Bear Went Over the Mountain skewers our age's obsession with money and fame in a delicious bedtime story for grown-ups.

I‘m loving this adventuresome little tale. Kotzwinkle‘s eccentricity is a nice change. And, given the success of E.T., he can most likely afford to have unadulterated, just plain fun with his literature. Perfect for a Saturday afternoon read.

A whimsical book that reads almost like a fairytale for adults (just an FYI warning: there are a lot of sexual details in here and most are not suitable for younger readers)
This story follows Hal Jam who is a bear, who stole a manuscript, and the human he stole the manuscript from. I found it extremely funny and if you can set aside the disbelief that no one realized Hal's a bear, it's a fun quick read. 😊🐻

A very different approach to a narrative, placing a emphasis of leaning what it means to be human from an outsider's point of view.

It's weird, no doubt weirder than you imagine but worth the time.

This was a fun read; who knew Forest Gump was a bear?
