Voinjama Johnson, 28, is an ambitious investigative journalist at the Cape Town magazine Urban. Her life is messy, and to top it all, Vees been seeing things: a teenage girl in a red hat, more specifically, an unsettling hallucination that goes hand-in-hand with debilitating episodes which Vee is loath to call panic attacks. When Vee spots a photograph of the girl from her visions at a local hospital, she quickly launches an investigation, under the pretext of an article about missing children in Cape Town. Shes soon delving into the secretsof the fractured Fourie and Paulsen families, with the help of her assistant Chle Bishop. Why cant anyone answer their questions? What happened to Jacqui Paulsen, who left home two years ago and hasnt been seen since? The Lazarus Effect is a gripping new addition to the Cape Town crime genre from a very talented debut author. Deon Meyer calls it a "wonderful debut" that is "brimming with intelligence, wit, and real heart. Enormously entertaining".

#readaroundtheworld #liberia I was in need of a break from classic literature so I picked this crime fiction from a first time author from Liberia. She uses the framework of the genre well and messes a bit with the gender stereotypes. The main protagonist is a bit all over the place but the secondary characters are quite good. Overall, a fun read, if a bit “canned”. As this was set in South Africa it probably doesn‘t count for Liberia.

Well written female characters FTW 👏🏽 Love Vee Johnson and Chloe Bishop and I love the setting of Cape Town as well. Starts of slow, but once you get into it, you just wanna finish it! Also Joshua Allen 💜 AND MONRO 💜💜💜

Even if you're not a fan of crime try it!
