A Death in the Dales
A Death in the Dales: Kate Shackleton Mysteries 07 | Frances Brody
5 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
A murder most foul When the landlord of a Yorkshire tavern is killed in plain sight, Freda Simonson, the only witness to the crime, becomes plagued with guilt, believing the wrong man has been convicted. Following her death, it seems that the truth will never be uncovered in the peaceful village of Langcliffe . . . A village of secrets But it just so happens that Freda's nephew is courting the renowned amateur sleuth Kate Shackleton, who decides to holiday in Langcliffe with her indomitable teenage niece, Harriet. When Harriet strikes up a friendship with a local girl whose young brother is missing, the search leads Kate to uncover another suspicious death, not to mention an illicit affair. The case of a lifetime As the present mysteries merge with the past's mistakes, Kate is thrust into the secrets that Freda left behind and realises that this courageous woman has entrusted her with solving a murder from beyond the grave. It soon becomes clear to her that nothing in Langcliffe is quite as it appears, and with a murderer on the loose and an ever-growing roster of suspects, this isn't the holiday Kate was expecting . . .

As the General Strike gets underway, Kate takes up a case from 10 years before in which Lucian's deceased aunt was sure the wrong man was convicted and hanged.

There were lots of references to one of Kate's previous cases which I didn't remember that well as the backstory for one of the characters. They didn't get in the way of the mystery but were annoying.

Pick, verging on a So-So

Skipping back in the series compared to where I‘ve been and this fills in some gaps. Kate is on holiday in a house whose former owner was convinced that the wrong person was convicted (and hanged) for a murder she witnessed. Kate feels called to investigate but also finds herself exploring a community that she could be a part of.

CarolynM I'm a it behind with this series. I need to catch up! 2y
marleed What a pretty collection of books! 2y

This is the 7th book in this series (I think) I haven't read all the books only two and not in order. This is an enjoyable read. I like Kate she is a good character I guess rather similar to Maisie Dobbs. #books
