Seiobo There Below
Seiobo There Below | László Krasznahorkai
From the winner of the 2015 Man Booker International Prize The latest novel from “the contemporary Hungarian master of the apocalypse” (Susan Sontag) Seiobo — a Japanese goddess — has a peach tree in her garden that blossoms once every three thousand years: its fruit brings immortality. In Seiobo There Below, we see her returning again and again to mortal realms, searching for a glimpse of perfection. Beauty, in Krasznahorkai’s new novel, reflects, however fleetingly, the sacred — even if we are mostly unable to bear it. Seiobo shows us an ancient Buddha being restored; Perugino managing his workshop; a Japanese Noh actor rehearsing; a fanatic of Baroque music lecturing a handful of old villagers; tourists intruding into the rituals of Japan’s most sacred shrine; a heron hunting.… Over these scenes and more — structured by the Fibonacci sequence — Seiobo hovers, watching it all.

Guys!! One of my favorite indie book stores, Green Apple Books, has had this highlighted with a shelf talker forever. And it's on sale for the digital edition today!! And a William Boyd. I haven't read this one but loved Any Human Heart. Grab that while you are there. 😉📚ðŸ‘ðŸ»

mhillis I hadn't heard of this one! It looks good📚 7y
HardcoverHearts @mhillis That's what I love so much about independent book stores that take the time to recommend and do shelf takers. I never would have read some amazing books without their nod of approval. 7y

Pickpick

Assume this is art theory in novel form. Do not be intimidated by a lack of paragraphs. Incredibly detailed and researched, this is both a meditation and a study of what it's like to experience and make art.

Hobbinol Oh, I just have to read this. Thank you. 8y
DreesReads I tried to read this with a goodreads group and couldn't make it to page 25. I have taken several art classes (middle school, grad school, university extension, Getty class for the public) and I was pretty much told the same thing each time--I create and interpret art incorrectly. Including my own. Now I know why I couldn't read this! 8y
Genrebending @AudreyMorris I honestly don't know what it means to create and interpret art 'incorrectly'. I feel that this book is either love it or hate it because of its style, so I don't think it says anything about anyone's ability to experience art. Go forth and art! :) 8y

DreesReads @Genrebending I don't understand either, but when you are told to draw a pic of a clown (from imagination) and then graded down because the use is wrong, or when asked what a certain piece of art means to you and upon answering are told that since it clearly means XX you cannot feel Y, is what I mean. This is the same reason I became a history major rather than an English major. I do not understand how there can be one correct interpretation. 8y
readinginthedark @AudreyMorris I was an English major and found that my professors never expected certain interpretations of literature in college the way they did in lower grades. Usually the opposite, actually; they encouraged us to come up with completely new interpretations for the potential of groundbreaking scholarly potential. 😊 8y
readinginthedark That last sentence didn't make any sense. *for the potential of groundbreaking scholastic study 8y

My main #24in48 #readathon book for today. For bookgroup reasons. @24in48

DreesReads How is it going? I tried to read this for a group and gave up after 10 pages. 8y
Genrebending @AudreyMorris oddly enough, I love it. Although I feel like my consciousness goes to a different plane after reading it for a while 8y

Self-portrait in meditation behind (and induced by) the inaugural book in my International Literature book group at Politics and Prose. If, by chance, there are any DC residents here, first meeting (where we'll talk this book) will start at the store at 7 PM on Wednesday, July 27th.

This is exactly how I'd expect Krasznahorkai to sign books.
