pickOoof, this book was A LOT! CW: rape!
This starts off fairly innocently as a relatable tale about a teenager going slightly off the rails - she's a bit too sexually active and she drinks too much. Sounds like me at 17. Gradually, it becomes clear that her drinking is at a dangerous level, she is an unreliable narrator, and her experience changes from cringe to catastrophic. It's got a happy ending, but the way Shappi sucks us in is incredible. Fab.
pickA heartbreaking book beautifully written. Nina‘s story is unfortunately so real for many people, Shappi has created something that is raw and honest. It was incredibly easy to read considering how triggering some of the topics are. Glad I picked this one up in the bookshop #pick

Shappi Khorsandi's debut novel (not her debut book,she's previously written a memoir about fleeing Iran as a child) was brilliant. Probably my favourite book of last year.
pickThis book hasn't been receiving nearly the hype I expected in the bookish corners of the Internet I inhabit. I don't know if it's because it's a 'celebrity' author? It's a seriously well done portrayal of teenage alcoholism and the reason Nina goes down that path. I particularly liked how well done the supporting characters were. Add it to your TBR.
pickIt took me a little while to get into this and at first I found it a bit repetitive. But I gathered that this is actually a stylistic twist that lets you fully see the protagonist's self-destructive behaviour. Definitely a recommendation, especially the audiobook that's narrated by the author herself.

pickAfter a tough first third, I found myself rooting for the main character Nina. Her journey through rehab and trying to sort her life out generally was both heartbreaking, funny and positive.
So this arrived in the post this morning. It's like Christmas!! I'm lucky to get my name picked out of the hat quite often through Mumsnet (a British website for mums, unsurprisingly!). This looks like a rather good book!
pickThis is a book that everyone needs to read.... Just.... Everyone.
It covers sensitive topics with humour, delicacy and brutal honesty. Nina is my favourite character of the year so far
