You can now read the full Lite Reads review of out most recent selection, The True Story of "Faccetta Nera" by Igiaba Scego, translated by Antony Shugaar (link below). I personally thought this short nonfiction was informative, insightful, and shed light on topics I'm not well versed in (Italian culture/history is not my strong suit). I'm eager to hear what others had to think, so be sure to let me know in the comments!

I wanted a big scene, that way I'd stop thinking about Lul....about the strange peace in Somalia. But the girl got wise. She sauntered over and virtually without warning shot me her question: "You're Adua, right? The actress? I saw your movie." And then after a pause, as if she'd planned it out, she added: "You really make an impression, you know that?”
I was completely rattled.
My movie? There was actually someone who still remembered that movie?

A short and harrowing book about a time I knew little about: Italy‘s invasion and attempted colonization of Somalia. A bit disjointed and at times, hard to follow, but well worth the effort.

Rainy, cold day, silly dog, fuzzy blankets, great literature, happy woman. ❤️. Currently reading.

FlowerFairy ❤️ this so much! Exact same situation here except replace uber cute doggie with equally snuggly kitty. 6y
Elizabeth_Chatsworth Cute puppy! 😍😍😍 6y
Carolyn-HHI @FlowerFairy - I love cats too! I have two! Enjoy your day! 6y
Carolyn-HHI @Elizabeth_Chatsworth ~ she says thank you! I was told she was 14 when I adopted her (in June 2016) but she has grown younger with love ❤️. She is the best little companion. Very very sweet. 6y

Finished this over lunch. If you're looking to read more about the immigrant experience, I would recommend you pick this up! Adua is an immigrant to Italy from Somalia. The chapters alternate between Adua and Zoppe, her father, and two different time periods. Covers Italian colonialism, 1970s Somalia, and the present day.

batsy Nice review, I just added this to my wishlist the other day :) 7y

ThursdayN Any good? Been thinking about reading it. 8y
ulejo I liked it a lot! I did not know much about the relations and conflict between Italy and Somalia and this book gives a very human perspective. 8y
