Creatures of Light and Darkness
Creatures of Light and Darkness | Roger Zelazny
4 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
Two gods, two houses, one quest, and the eternal war between life and death To save his kingdom, Anubis, Lord of the Dead, sends forth his servant on a mission of vengeance. At the same time, from The House of Life, Osiris sends forth his son, Horus, on the same mission to destroy utterly and forever The Prince Who Was a Thousand. But neither of these superhuman warriors is prepared for the strange and harrowing world of mortal life, and The Thing That Cries in the Night may well destroy not only their worlds, but all mankind. As Zelazny did with the Hindu pantheon in the legendary, groundbreaking classic Lord of Light, the master storyteller here breathes new life into the Egyptian gods with another dazzling tale of mythology and imagination.

Mehso-so

Trippy. Follows a fairly traditional path for mythology: violent, power hungry male gods intermarrying and jockeying for position, females can only scheme or be victimized on the sidelines. I fear the sci fi embellishments are decorative rather than purposeful. Had enough plot for a short story, poetic/psychedelic language blew it up to novella proportions. 🤷🏼‍♂️ ⚠️ body horror, suicide, torture, mention of incest, SA, fatphobia, misogyny

RamsFan1963 Have you read Lord of Light by Zelazny? It's a much better book, one of my all time favorites. It's based on Hindu mythology, but it's easy to understand, and it's a good adventure story to boot. 8mo
Robotswithpersonality @RamsFan1963 I actually just put in an ILL request for Lord of Light yesterday! Crying shame my own library system doesn't have more Zelazny; hopefully it won't take too long to get it. 8mo

I always wondered what non-domininational last rites would look like. Evidently, boilerplate.

#WalkLikeAnEgyptian This is my favorite Egyptian themed book. While not as celebrated as Lord of Light, I think it's just as good.

Cinfhen I‘m curious about this one!! I‘ve never really delved into the Egyptian Gods. Is this a straightforward read? 5y
RamsFan1963 @cinfhen Its science-fiction version of Egyptian Gods set in the future, but Zelazny had done his research. I read a non fiction book on Egyptian mythology, The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt, and Zelazny was pretty spot on in his depiction. I also recommend that book if you're interested in Egyptian Mythology. 5y
Cinfhen Hmmmm, I‘m thinking this might not be for me 🤪 5y
