Moses, Man of the Mountain
Moses, Man of the Mountain | Zora Neale Hurston
6 posts | 3 read | 10 to read
In this 1939 novel based on the familiar story of the Exodus, Zora Neale Hurston blends the Moses of the Old Testament with the Moses of black folklore and song to create a compelling allegory of power, redemption, and faith. Narrated in a mixture of biblical rhetoric, black dialect, and colloquial English, Hurston traces Moses's life from the day he is launched into the Nile river in a reed basket, to his development as a great magician, to his transformation into the heroic rebel leader, the Great Emancipator. From his dramatic confrontations with Pharaoh to his fragile negotiations with the wary Hebrews, this very human story is told with great humor, passion, and psychological insightthe hallmarks of Hurston as a writer and champion of black culture.

For my Master‘s Thesis I‘m working on an old theater play about Moses. I will finish it soon; so today I‘m trying to finish big parts of transcribing the play, this time with the original writing (usually I work with a Scan). It is so very special to handle a handwritten book from 1723, I‘m so happy I get the chance to do this😍😍

Pickpick

I loved this as a novel. As biblical interpretation (I‘m a Hebrew Bible professor), I have reservations. Hurston gives Moses such power that it‘s debatable whether the God on Sinai is even real, or whether Moses himself is God. Also, I couldn‘t hate the characterizations of Miriam & Aaron more. But as storycraft, the book is wonderful & full of wisdom. The parallel of the Black experience in America with Israel is Ruch & thought-provoking.

Seems like folks in the White House and Congress could stand a refresher on some of Ms. Hurston‘s excellent advice on how to be a leader.

“Well, the present was an egg laid by the past that had the future inside its shell.”
...Just think on the richness of that metaphor for a while.
