Shadow Magic | Patricia C. Wrede
6 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
In the magic woods of Lyra, a noblewoman struggles to escape from a faceless manTrouble is brewing in Alkyra. While the kingdoms noblemen squabble, on their borders an ancient enemy, the Lithmern, raises an army. As the head of the Noble House of Brenn attempts to organize an alliance, the princess Alethia celebrates her twentieth birthday. She is a remarkable woman: quick-witted, beautiful, and handy with a throwing knife. But on the next night, she passes through a dark corridor on her way to the banquet hall, and never emerges from the shadows. The Lithmern have kidnapped the princess. When Alethia regains consciousness, an evil Lithmern with a face made of shadows is carrying her through the forest. These are magic woods, home to fabled creatures whose existence she has always doubted. To find her way home, Alethia will have to learn to trust in the old tales, whose legends of magic and daring hold the only hope of saving her kingdom.

Shadow Magic | Patricia C. Wrede

March #Bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

I really enjoyed this, although yeah, the tropes are there. But it was written in 1982 and was her first book, so I'll give her a break on that.

I'll be reading the rest of the series as well.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I enjoyed Shadow Magic, although it's Wrede's first book and you can kind of tell 😂 It doesn't have as much humor as some of her later books. 14mo

SHADOW MAGIC starts off highly readable and engaging, but it lost me about a third of the way through as it leaned into tropes I‘m tired of. Fifteen years ago, I probably would‘ve enjoyed it well enough. These days, I‘ve read so much pseudo-medieval fantasy, and so many travel-heavy quests involving Stupendous and Magical Thingies and/or People, that I‘m saturated. Books like this are a hard sell for me. I couldn‘t care enough to make it past 50%.

New book + bubble tea doughnut. So far, SHADOW MAGIC practically reads itself, which makes it exactly what I need this close to the end of the year. I hope it keeps up.

UwannaPublishme I‘m so hungry for that donut right now. 😁🍩 3y
xicanti @UwannaPublishme it was delicious! 3y

Reading a Kindle omnibus is the worst! How much longer will this particular book last?? No idea!

Here are picks 6-10 for #20BooksofSummer

I'm intrigued to read Shadow Magic, as I have loved Wrede's other books. The Lyra novels are her first, and I have heard they are weaker than her later books, but I still think they will be fun.
