Bailedbailed

I rarely bail, but 24% in and I simply cannot continue. This book was not written for me. It has some great reviews, but 🤷🏼

EadieB @tove_reads Oh no another bad one! 5mo

Yes, it‘s time to start yet another new series 😍 I really hope it‘s a good one!

robinb It was a 4⭐️ for me with a couple of caveats. But willing to try the second one. 👍😊 5mo
Andrew65 I can get the first 4 of these through my Prime membership, and also have a copy of the fifth. Unless something changes may need to get sixth and last one through Audible. (edited) 5mo
EadieB I‘ve had this book on my shelf for a while and just saw it the other day. 5mo

Pickpick

This was really more between a pick and a so-so, but I‘d be willing to try the second in series. Set in 1590 London, young Dr. Nicholas Shelby blames himself and sinks into despair when he loses someone he loves. He begins to see a pattern on several bodies that are washing up from the Thames and sets out to investigate with the help of new friends who‘ve helped him struggle back from the brink. This book is dark both in its murders and the 🔻

robinb atmosphere of the setting. My chief issue was that at 450 pages it was simply too long. I thought maybe it was just set-up for the rest of the series, but in looking ahead the subsequent books are the same length. There were slow places and no need to spread the story out that long. 🔻 2y
robinb I was also a little frustrated at some abrupt changes in venue/storyline. And while I didn‘t feel especially enamored with the characters, I feel that they will probably come into their own in future books. 4/5⭐️ #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks 2y
TheAromaofBooks I have read a few books lately that just felt like they needed one more final edit. A hundred pages - or even fifty - can make a huge difference in how a book reads! 2y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks Exactly. Well put! 😊👍 2y

Mehso-so

The third book (to date) in the Nicholas Shelby series, this is a sixteenth-century spy romp split between Marrakech and London. The settings are clearly and atmospherically created. There‘s plenty of murder, plague etc in the plot, but it seems strangely slow-moving – it really does take a long time to get going, and I‘m not sure that the wait‘s worth it. It just left me a bit cold.
