People of color are eager for white people to deal with their racial ignorance. White people are desperate for an affirmative role in racial justice. Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness helps with conversations the nation is, just now, finally starting to have.

Happy Black History Month!
A reminder to share 2 awesome children‘s books I‘ve read recently...
💈 Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut has amazing illustrations. Ages 3-8 but there‘s much to love for any age group.
🇺🇸 I read Not My Idea aloud to my dh & we had lots of discussion & praise. A tool to start a difficult conversation about racism w/white children, it shares simple conversation starters & examples of how to be an upstander. Ages 8 & up.

I‘ve never seen a picture book tackle the subject of white privilege before. This is such an excellent and important resource to start or continue a conversation on the subject. I also really like the mixed media illustrations.

Butterfinger Your posts would be awesome for a young teacher just building a class library. It would be inclusive and that is what we need in schools. There wasn't much literature available 20 years ago when I started. 5y
alisiakae @Butterfinger 🤩 That is the sweetest compliment. ☺️ I volunteered in my daughter‘s elementary school library for a few years, and did just that! Hoping to do so again now that she‘s moving up to middle school! 5y

Butterfinger @4thhouseontheleft don't let me mislead you; I had the best time building my library. It just seems there are so much more diversity represented now. I know what it is. Your posts make me wish I was still a reading teacher and I would have a reason to purchase them. Hahaha. I am currently teaching science, which is not my cup of tea. We have fun, but it isn't as easy teaching empathy in science as it is in history and literature. 5y
