Kelsey Wroten's Cannonball fires the reader straight into the messy life of Caroline Bertram: aspiring writer, queer, art school graduate, near alcoholic, and self proclaimed tortured genius. Wroten tells the story of an artist struggling with the arrival of adulthood and the Sisyphean task of artistic fulfillment. Stunningly drawn in a classic style, with big truths and biting wit, Wroten's debut graphic novel is Art School Confidential for the Tumblr generation.

Mehso-so

More graphic novels from my spree yesterday. This one was about a writer who just graduated art school. She deals with growing up, people changing, and what it means to work for a living. I hated the main girl, but I think you were supposed to?

Pickpick

Caroline struggles with her ego & her ideals regarding artistic integrity in this character-driven #graphicnovel about a young lesbian writer, newly graduated & determined to live like a carefree puppy. She can be prickly & unpleasant, even towards her steadfast friends, but I found her fascinating & rooted for her to pull herself together & to succeed. Expressive stylized artwork in playful colours add to the emotional impact. #LGBTQ

Love the humour in this novel. Also love the dyke-y look of Penelope (bottom right), Caroline‘s best friend.

Caroline, the central protagonist, is as mean to herself as she is to other people. I feel sympathetic towards her, in any case. Here, a straight woman takes advantage of Caroline‘s romantic feelings towards her and eventually gets a deserved earful. Caroline walks home pissed off and alone, thinking: “Straight with a skullet? That‘s practically sacrilege!”

Idk it‘s written like kids out of college trying to be deeper then they are. Which I guess is kinda the point of it, considering the main character is just out of college. But it‘s just not for me.

This is the only comic I grabbed at TCAF today. I‘m very excited to read Kelsey Wroten‘s first graphic novel.
