Soul Tourists | Bernardine Evaristo
5 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
The funny and fabulous tale of two twentieth-century misfits and their adventure into European history... It is 1988, and Jessie, artiste, motormouth, ducker and diver, meets Stanley, angst-ridden banker and boffin. Jessie arrives like a guardian angel and lifts Stanley out of his soul-less life. He ditches his job, and together they set off across Europe. Destination -- unknown. Duration -- indeterminate. So begins an odyssey which turns into an adventure on the stage of European history featuring Shakespeare's "dark lady of the sonnets", Pushkin's African great-grandfather, the composer Chevalier de St. Georges and other colourful characters from Europe's past.

Stanley has recently lost his father. Jessie works in a bar. One day these to meet. Before they know it they are traveling across Europe together in Jessie‘s old car.

I love Evaristo‘s writing and how she mixes prose and poetry. I loved Sanley‘s connection to the past and how that made it possible for us to learn more about the places they visit.

The Château de Versailles is one of the largest palaces the world has ever known, and it swallows its mass of visitors whole, whiteout so much as a genteel burp.

Bone white, white lead, blond, blanc d‘argent, blanc de fard, blanc fixe, antimony white, titanium white, strontium white, Paris white, zinc oxide, zinc sulphide.
Before I moved into this place and redecorated I never knew there were so many official shades of white.

Started this and loved it, kept thinking about it, intrigued by the way it was both written and the story.
Parts are written as a play, other chapters in poetry, some very short sections. Historical figures are introduced throughout, each in their country or culture, following Stanley in his travels.
I can't say I particularly liked either narrator; each had a level.of vulnerability but wasn't too likeable.

I adored GWO by her, found it riveting and very educational too.
This was in my new local library and needed a slim book to take on a coach trip tomorrow.
Sounds interesting and loved the cover 😍😎😊😆
