Terrific Mother
Terrific Mother: Faber Stories | Lorrie Moore
2 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
Adrienne is living in a puritanical age, when the best compliment a childless woman can get is: 'You'd make a terrific mother'. That's when she goes to her friends' Labor Day picnic and accidentally kills their baby. The shock of this scene is expertly packed into two brief paragraphs. What follows is Adrienne's retreat from life and her attempt to return to it. Her sharp scepticism about the people around her is achingly funny. Yet beyond derision there is forgiveness and something along the lines of love.

Terrific Mother by Lorrie Moore is a tragic story–written in a prose which is as funny as it's sad and beautiful–of a woman going through grief and eventually overcoming it.

Bonus: It's set in Italy, and there are some brilliant descriptions of food and place.

To give a glimpse of the writing, here is an excerpt: 👇🏽

Tanisha_A “She set her sketch pad on the worktable and began a morning full of killing spiders and drawing their squashed and tragic bodies. The spiders were star-shaped, hairy, and scuttling like crabs. They were fallen stars. Bad stars. They were earth‘s animal try at heaven. Often she had to step on them twice—they were large and ran fast. Stepping on them once usually just made then run faster.” 4y

These 4 stories from the Faber 20 have kept me engaged during this early daylight savings time week of commutes. I may have gotten over my aversion to the form of short stories with this collection. And I feel like I am getting acquainted with writers I have always meant to read but haven‘t gotten around to it. It‘s a brilliant collection. I‘m glad I ordered them from Book Depository as they are UK only releases.

merelybookish And the covers are gorgeous! 5y
