Next row of my #readinglogsnake is Women Warriors by Pamela D. Toler in honor of #WomensHistoryMonth. Orange representing nonfiction. This was a good read. I found out a lot about female warriors I was not aware of, like Lakshmi Bai, Buffalo Calf Road Woman, and Cheng I Sao to name a few. Highly recommend this book. 4/5 ⭐️ #ARRCReads #BooksAndCrafts

pickI love that last sentence. “But they left Tomryis and the Massagetae alone.” Tomyris was a formidable foe.
This was a lively, informative, and refreshing read. Obviously a lot of research went into this one. I also enjoyed that Toler spoke about the lack of information for research. She said she used what was available but let the reader know the historical record was slim in some areas. Glad she didn‘t make things up to fill in the narrative.
Caterina chose to defend her fortress rather than her children. Motherhood is a complicated cultural concept as well as a matter of biology.
In its most positive form, the “not-warrior” is framed in terms of motherhood, potential and actual. “They have potential motherhood, and if you kill that, you kill the whole race.” Women are seen as natural pacifists precisely because they are mothers. To accept women as warriors means a challenge to the patriarchy at its most fundamental level.
pickThis was such a good and informative read. I felt a little ashamed that I only knew about a handful of these women. I guess school curriculum does not find their accomplishments worth anything... Anyway, it was a good way to celebrate National Women‘s History Month!
