The Magnetic Girl
The Magnetic Girl | Jessica Handler
3 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
For fans of Emma Donoghue and Alexander Chee, The Magnetic Girl is set at a time when the emerging presence of electricity raised suspicions about the other-worldly gospel of Spiritualism, and when women's desire for political, cultural, and sexual presence electrified the country.

A fictionalization of Lulu Hurst‘s, the Georgia Wonder, life from childhood through her performances, this was well written but very slow going. This evokes post Civil War and does a good job exposing the chicanery of the time while main character Lulu comes fully into her power as a woman. A clever premise and beautiful writing. But, the plot and pace lagged for me. #audiobook

Book mail from the always fabulous Hub City Press. If you like small presses, you need to know this one. If you are oblivious to what press/imprint publishes your reads, you should still make an effort to search HC‘s books out because they are consistently well done. I‘m very excited to get to read this one!
