Practice to Deceive
Practice to Deceive | Ann Rule
10 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
From America s best true-crime writer ("Kirkus Reviews") Ann Rule comes the "New York Times "bestselling mystery novel of drama, greed, sex, scandal, and murder on an eerie island in the Pacific Northwest. Nestled in Puget Sound and accessible only by ferry, Whidbey Island is a gem off the coast of Washington State where life is insular and the island s year-round residents tend to know one another s business. But when the blood-drenched body of Russel Douglas is discovered the day after Christmas in his SUV, the whole island is shocked. No one can imagine who among them could plot such a cold-blooded crime. And like a cast of characters from a mystery novel, a host of Whidbey residents fall under suspicion. Brenna Douglas was Russel s estranged and soon-to-be-ex wife, who allowed him to come home for a Christmas visit with their children. Brenna often complained to her good friend Peggy Sue that Russel was physically and emotionally abusive. Married three times, Peggy Sue s own life has been one of extremes: hers is a rags-to-riches-and-back-again tale. But in 2003, her love affair with married guitarist Jim Huden led the two Whidbey Island natives to pursue their ultimate dreams of wealth and privilege even at the expense of human life. Unravel the tangled web woven by Russel Douglas s murder in "Practice to Deceive," the newest heart pounding true-crime tour de force from Ann Rule."

Where did last week go? It's that time already 😱

You can't really go wrong with the Queen of Crime. As always it's well documented, easy to follow and well written.

I grew up reading Ann Rule, she set the bar for True Crime books for me. But this book, one of her last, is just not up to her usual work. There's a lot of sex shaming, unnecessary plot, and the murder itself was not as difficult to solve as Rule made it out to be. While her books normally bring the victim to life, I finished knowing hardly anything about Russel Douglas other than his wife's nasty rumors. Not recommending this one. Book 12 of 2021

Don't read this. The murder is underwhelming (it's obvious who benefited from the murder so the investigation is really a matter of slowly proving how it was done although it's not presented that way). But more importantly, the book is bi-phobic/homophobic as well as shaming of people in open relationships. The early chapters are so bad that I assumed it had been written in the 70s. But no. I guess when you're Ann Rule no one calls you out. 😡

I will preface this with I don‘t read a lot of true crime. I found this book to meander about, with a million people to keep track of and I got confused between some of them. I liked the final parts where they discussed the catching of the person and the trial. Beginning wasn‘t as good IMO. #AnyWayYouReadathon

MidnightBookGirl I will be reading this soon! 3y
kimmypete1 @MidnightBookGirl I highly suggest writing down all the people, there are SO MANY. 3y

Went on a very breezy walk today and listened to Practice to Deceive. There are SO MANY PEOPLE, I really need a cheat sheet. Enjoying it, despite the fact I feel a little lost. Hoping to finish tomorrow. #AnyWayYouReadathon #BookSpinBingo

Eggbeater It's so cold. You get bonus points for walking in what passes for winter in VA. 3y
kimmypete1 @Eggbeater ha! It was 45 so not too bad, the wind was the worst part. It whipped around me any time I was in a more open area. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I legit have had books in the past where I got out an index card to write down characters & what page number they were introduced 😂 3y

maich Beutiful😍❤ So we are not the only one without snow😂 In which state do you live? 3y
kimmypete1 @maich I live in Virginia. We get 1-2 decent snows a year usually (except last year we got none). I used to live in Wisconsin, I definitely prefer less snow. 3y
maich @kimmypete1 last winter we were without snow too. This winter was snowing only first week of december. But now it was raining (from Dec 23 until Jan 7) so we were indoors. It is flooding everywhere. But other region in Slovenia have snow. Snow is great for winter activities with kids. But is bad for driving to work. I am so bad with draving in the snow🙈 3y
kimmypete1 @maich Flooding sucks! Snow is wonderful for kids, but I agree I hate driving in it. I‘m very fortunate that when it does snow here school is closed so I don‘t have to go to work. 3y
maich @kimmypete1 It's snowing here too. Started today afternoon. 3y

Meh, it was okay. Maybe I wasn‘t in the middle but the writing seemed clunky and childish and the story fell flat for me. I nearly bailed on it but the promise of a trial kept me reading

Sometimes you just feel like reading about true crime. Ann Rule rules. How do these people live like this and why do people get so involved with bad decisions? Narcissistic people are SCARY.
