In Praise of Shadows | Jun?ichir? Tanizaki

This is an enchanting essay on aesthetics by one of the greatest Japanese novelists. Tanizaki's eye ranges over architecture, jade, food, toilets, and combines an acute sense of the use of space in buildings, as well as perfect descriptions of lacquerware under candlelight and women in the darkness of the house of pleasure. The result is a classic description of the collision between the shadows of traditional Japanese interiors and the dazzling light of the modern age.

To be honest I bought this for its stunning cover that I feel completely in love with.

Inside is an essay on how the orientals love the shadows and the westerners love the light. It was interesting, and I think I liked it.

After a big reading and anxiety slump I have managed to finish a book! So proud of myself, it‘s the longest I‘ve gone without reading this year and it was really affecting me. This was a beautiful and thought provoking book highlighting differences between eastern and western cultures that I would never have considered. I can‘t say I agree on everything, particularly his thoughts on women, but I‘m very glad I read and considered all of it.

AnneCecilie I just bought this. I‘m looking forward to reading this so it‘s nice to see positive reviews 5y
