The Lighthouse
The Lighthouse: The Mystery of the Missing Eilean Mor Lighthouse Keepers | Keith McCloskey
4 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
What really happened to the mysteriously vanished lighthouse keepersa true story, evocative of The Shining On December 26, 1900, the vessel Hesperus arrived at Eilean Mor in the remote Outer Hebrides with relief lighthouse men and fresh provisions. Staffed by three keepers, the lighthouse had been in operation for a year, but no light had been seen from Eilean Mor for 10 days. Upon arrival, the superintendent, Robert Muirhead, found the lighthouse to be completely deserted, and a subsequent search of the surrounding island failed to show any sign of what happened to the keepers. The last entry in the lighthouse logbook had been made on December 15, and contained a number of strange and distressing entries that offered clues as to the mental state of the men. One was reported to have been crying, while another had become "very quiet." When it was revealed that the men's oilskin coats were missing and the clock in the lighthouse had stopped, inevitable theories surrounding the keepers' fates were soon put forward. These included a giant wave washing them away, murder and suicide by the men themselves, and more esoteric explanations, as Eilean Mor was believed to have mystical properties. This book explores this mysterious and chilling story in depth for the first time and reveals a shocking conclusion.

I‘ll give this 3 ⭐️. I like reading books about unsolved mysteries , and have had my eye on this for awhile. To be honest, it‘s really not action packed reading , but it does give quite a good picture of what life would be like as a lighthouse keeper. I like my space, but I think this would be difficult. These guys were the only 3 on this rock out in the ocean for stretches of a month at a time with no other contact. The author gives several 👇🏼

ljuliel 👆🏼theories of what may have happened , and his first guess seems most believable. One of the men had a volatile temper and was in his first month of training, so whether either of those played into the scenarios, no one knows. There are other stories of strange occurrences in other lighthouses , so parts were pretty interesting. So- so for the book as a whole. 1mo
Susanita I think there‘s a movie about this story? 1mo

ljuliel Oh...thank you @Susanita ! I don‘t know anything about a movie. There could be one. I don‘t keep up on movies very well .. The book you mentioned sounds good. 👌🏼 I‘ll definitely be looking that one up. 1mo
ljuliel @Susanita - I just found the book for Kindle for sale for $1.99 😁. Thanks very much for mentioning it. 1mo
Susanita The movie apparently came out last year, but I didn‘t hear about it until our tour guide out of Stornoway mentioned it. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4131496/ 1mo
ljuliel Ooh. I love the title , the accents 😍 and the scenery is stark, but beautiful. After reading the book, I‘d say the movie is based very loosely on the facts. I don‘t think anything of quite that caliber happened. It looks like it‘d make an exciting movie though. Thanks for the link. I could listen to that accent all day ! @susanita (edited) 1mo

I enjoyed this book but it was dryish and repetitive. I liked learning about the planning of the lighthouse but the mystery is sort of “answered” early in the book, leaving the organization a bit muddled and circular.

The air was thick with smoke and humidity clinging to the particulate, giving my bus commute this morning eerie, foggy feeling so I started this book I‘ve been looking forward to start once it got cooler. Source of map is https://www.transceltic.com/scottish/mystery-of-scotland-s-flannan-isles-lightho... I‘ve always wanted to be a lighthouse keeper.

Dragon The smoke has been bad this week. 1y
