A powerful and poignant novel, set in and around a riot in India in 1989, is about love, hate, cultural collision, the ownership of history, and the impossibility of knowing the truth.

Undoubtedly one of the most underrated novels of Tharoor. The writer uses letters & journals to describe the tragic love story between an American activist and Indian IAS officer during the highly unstable period of Babri Masjid riots in a fictional place called Zalilgarh. Although being a fictional novel it entangles with the real riots that took place in India. Amazingly portrayed the thoughts of Hindu, Muslim and Secularists in India.Must read!
