Last Pick | Jason Walz
4 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
In this first volume of Jason Walz's dystopian graphic novel trilogy, the kids last picked are humanity's last hope. Three years ago, aliens invaded Earth and abducted everyone they deemed useful. The only ones spared were those too young, too old, or too disabled to be of value. Living on Earth under the aliens harsh authoritarian rule, humanitys rejects do their best to survive. Their captors never considered them a threatuntil now. Twins Sam and Wyatt are ready to chuck their labels and start a revolution. Its time for the kids last picked to step into the game.

The Last Pick trilogy is a great graphic novel series for middle schoolers. Author Jason Walz, a special education teacher, understands the importance of representation; in a note he explains the main theme: “Whatever the world sees as ‘different‘ is exactly what the world needs.” I don‘t think it‘s a spoiler to say that kids turn out to be the heroes. 💖

I didn‘t mean to read the whole thing tonight, but here I am anyway. I‘m really enjoying this series about a teen-led rebellion against alien invaders... aliens who decided the old and the disabled were not worth their interest or time.... and now those same individuals are rising up! Looking forward to volume 3 this fall.

I surprised myself by getting into this story far more than I expected, and should have read this long ago! Twins Sam and Wyatt are left on earth with other kids, elderly, and disabled people following the alien invasion. They work together to try and find their parents, relying and their own strengths and if the other “rejects”. Appreciate the compassion with Wyatt‘s autism. #doublespin #bbrc #teenangst #physicalmentalemotionaldiversity ⬇️

If you have not read book one, this title can get a bit confusing. Trust me. I enjoyed it, and read it as a standalone. People are disappearing from earth and others have been enslaved by aliens. The two must both fight to see the continuance of the human race. A fun book, but I really need to read book one. I look forward to seeing the next book in the series.
