Fearless
Fearless: One Woman, One Kayak, One Continent | Joe Glickman
8 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
Like the instant classic The Last American Man, Fearless is the story of a remarkable individual who accepts no personal limitsincluding fear. Freya Hoffmeister, a forty-six-year-old former sky diver, gymnast, marksman, and Miss Germany contestant, left her twelve-year-old son behind to paddle alone and unsupported around Australiaa year-long adventure that virtually every expert guaranteed would get her killed. She planned not only to survive the 9,420-mile trip through huge, shark-infested seas, but to do it faster than the only other paddler who did it. As journalist and expert kayaker Joe Glickman details the voyage of this Teutonic force of nature, he captures interminable days on the water and nights camped out on deserted islands; hair-raising encounters with crocs and great white sharks; and the daring 300-mile open-ocean crossing that shaved three weeks off her trip. For 332 days Glickman followed Freyas journey on her blogalong with a far-flung audience of awestruck, even lovesick, groupiesas she took on one terrifying ordeal after the next. In the end, he says, her vanity and pigheadedness paled next to her nearly superhuman ability to master fear and persevere.

37/52-🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5-courage, strength, motivation, fame, badass, persistent, painful, crocodiles, sea snakes, deadly jelly fish, whales, sharks, wind, cliffs, love, success! So glad I finished it. About 1/3 in I wasn‘t sucked in, but it was worth it. I learned a lot about Freya, sea kayaking, and Australia!

Only 3 chapters left!!! Each chapter gets better and I am so impressed by her drive and determination. Circumnavigating Australia in a sea kayak is NO JOKE!

Making slow progress- 50% Read! Sea kayaking around Australia sounds scary and amazing. Freya is fearless and one badass woman!!!! I could never even think of attempted something like this. A solo international vacation is about the most adventurous thing I can do!

This is day 4 of my recovery from having my gallbladder removed and all seems to be going well, just slower than I anticipated. At least I get time to read about this fearless woman to take my mind off my recovery.

Linsy Good luck! 🤕 6y

It is getting better, so I am going to continue reading. Freya seems like a determined, independent, powerful force, and I want to know her story.

Only on chapter 2 and I have considered bailing, but I think it is too early. I will continue for now and hope I start to enjoy it more.

Monica5 I always give a book 100 pages. I figure if it hasn't caught me by then it's not. I use to struggle through every book I read, even if I hated it, not now though. There are so many good books out there to waste my time on one that's not grabbing me. 6y
Tjackson @Monica5 I agree! So many good books out there! Chapters 2 and 3 are much better, so I will probably finish it. 6y

Just finished my first 2 books for June. Now, I am going to start reading this book. Lately, all my reading selections have been about strong, empowered, independent women and this should fit right in.
