Classic Victorian and Edwardian Ghost Stories
Classic Victorian and Edwardian Ghost Stories | Rex Collings
2 posts | 2 read
This is a book to be read by a blazing fire on a winter's night, with the curtains drawn close and the doors securely locked. The unquiet souls of the dead, both as fictional creations and as 'real' apparitions, roam the pages of this haunting selection of ghost stories by Rex Collings. Some of these stories are classics while others are lesser-known gems unearthed from this vintage era of tales of the supernatural. There are stories from distant lands - 'Fisher's Ghost' by John Lang is set in Australia and 'A Ghostly Manifestation' by 'A Clergyman' is set in Calcutta. In this selection, Sir Walter Scott (a Victorian in spirit if not in fact), keeps company with Edgar Allen Poe, Sheridan Le Fanu and other illustrious masters of the genre.

Pickpick

What better way to spend an evening when the days shorten and the nights start to close in?! There are so many of these collections going for next to nothing that it‘s hard to pick but this one stands out for me because of the three allegedly ‘true‘ stories in a slim but oddly compelling section at the end. Weirdest of these is ‘Ghost in the Tower‘ by Edmund Swifte. It‘s short, weird as hell, and surely online for free somewhere. Any thoughts?

bibliothecarivs May I recommend Ackroyd's The English Ghost? (edited) 4y
Mistermandolin @Bibliothecarivs Looks fascinating. Thanks! 4y

I was desperate for some book finds while in Denmark for work, but goddammit they barely stock English books here!! 😆
But I did find these three classics and I‘m very excited for them all!! 👏🏼👏🏼

Swe_Eva There should be an In English-shelf somewhere in the bookstore, but perhaps they hid it too well. 😂 6y
LiteraryTess @Swe_Eva There was one! But it was tiny and insignificant and had like...10 books...! 1 of each..! 😂🙈 6y
Swe_Eva What?! That's shameful. 😮 6y

LiteraryTess @Swe_Eva Right?? Any bookstore with respect for themselves should have a massive English section!! That‘s what I had when I was running a bookstore 😂👍🏼 6y
Swe_Eva In Uppsala, Sweden, there's the English Bookstore, which just won the International Bookstore of the Year award at the London Book Fair, so next time you have to work on Denmark, tell them you need to work in Sweden instead. 😂 I only buy books in Swedish when I'm home visiting, but I know my store has at least 2 shelves of English and the children's section has its own! 6y
LiteraryTess @Swe_Eva Cool!! Is that the “English Bookshop”-one? I visited that one in Stockholm and LOVED it ❤️ we have an awesome one in Oslo as well (Outland), though it specialises in fantasy/sci fi! Luckily my old workplace has a good stock of English in all the stores! 😄🙏🏼 6y
Swe_Eva @LiteraryTess Yes! I believe the one is Stockholm is a branch off the Uppsala one. I live in the US, so I'm not starved for English language stuff, but instead go bonkers for the Swedish stuff when I go visit. 😉 6y
