The Fish with the Deep Sea Smile is a picture book P written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Henry Fisher. It tells the story of a family trying to find the fish with the deep sea smile. I would use this book as RA, IR, or AS. #UCFLAE3414SP18

JessicaC A way I would integrate this into my classroom is through this website, creating an art project out of the story. https://diaryofafirstchild.com/2014/07/14/the-fish-with-the-deep-sea-smile/. The ESOL accommodations are 2, 6,30. The UDL benefiting this lesson would be 1.2 offer alternatives for auditory information. 6y

The Fish with the Deep-Sea Smile is a Fantasy (F) picture book written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Henry Fisher. This is a book about a family that goes fishing for a specific fish, the fish with the deep-sea smile. Throughout the story, they continue to fish, pulling up a variety of different fish but never the one with the deep-sea smile. Finally, they catch the fish with the deep-sea smile. ⬇️

AmeliaS21 This story teaches students to never give up on their goal. The resource I chose is a site that has a cute activity where the students create some of the fish in the story. https://diaryofafirstchild.com/2014/07/14/the-fish-with-the-deep-sea-smile/ I think this would be a fun story to read aloud (RA) because you could see your student‘s reactions! ⬇️ 6y
AmeliaS21 I chose UDL 2.4 promote understanding across languages for this book. ESOL strategy 16 integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
ambera This is such a cute book! I went and bought it at Kohl's, along with the matching plush, after Dr.Spalding mentioned their $5 books. 6y
AmeliaS21 @ambera I did the same thing! I bought both the book and the plush! 6y

This is a Modern Fantasy (F) book about a family that wants to catch the perfect fish in the sea. This would be great for Readers Theatre (RT). The students can make this book come to life by reading from a script and using props for fun!

This link shows the animals in this book being made into crafts which is a fun activity for students to do. The students would be able to use their own crafts while reading their part of the book. This is a fun way to get students engaged in the book/activity.

kylamarie5 UDL: 1.1- Offer wats of customizing the display of information and 1.3- Offer alternatives for visual information
EL: 30- Encourage the use of diagrams and drawing as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships

Jeffersleighann I have been meaning to check out this book since Dr. Spaulding gave it away. It seems interesting and I‘m obsessed with the ocean and water 6y
AmeliaS21 I also used that resource! The activity was really cute! (edited) 6y

This is a good fiction book to use with first or second grade when you talk about rhyming. This is a cute book about a family who fishes the see looking for the fish with the deep see smile. They catch many fish before finding the fish with the deep see smile. The author is the dsame author who wrote Goodnight Moon. Genre is animal fantasy
#UCFLAE3414SP18

Fiona_i Teachers can read this book to there students. After the teacher has read it to there students they can write there own poem on the ocean with each other. https://www.google.com/amp/s/valleystorytime.wordpress.com/2012/12/30/storytime-.... This uses UDL 1.1. It also uses El strategy number 2. 6y
DrSpalding Be a little more clear with your UDL/EL principles. The resource eludes to performing a storytelling. This is another great idea. 6y

The Fish with the Deep-Sea Smile by Margaret Wise Brown, is a P picture book great for RA, IR, or AS. I just picked it up for $5! This book was 1 of 5 M.W.B books that Kohl‘s is featuring. (I was lucky to be given Goodnight Moon by #drspalding) This book tells the cute story, while rhyming, of a family set out on a journey to find the fish with deep sea smile. The illustration in this book by Henry Fisher is a must to see! #UCFLAE3414SP18

WendyV I think this book would be perfect for an AS! Here is a link to lesson plans good for 10 days on an AS unit all on Margaret Wise Brown.

I would use UDL 4.2 by having access to tools and technology for my students to complete an AS on M.W.B and continually monitor students comprehension throughout the unit, EL strategy 6.

kylamarie5 I bought this book at Kohls too! I haven‘t read it yet but after reading your post I am excited to read it😊 6y

WendyV @kylamarie5 that‘s awesome! I love that Kohl‘s has these great books for only $5. I‘ll have to pick up the stuffed fish next time I go back! 6y
DrSpalding I have an adorable video of my seven-year-old niece enjoying this book. She enjoyed the book so much, she didn‘t even ask for the plush. She was reading in the checkout line at Kohls! Excellent choice and I‘m glad you won her classic title, Goodnight Moon. 6y
morganhillman I saw this book in class and really wanted to read it! It looks like an amazing book that children will really dive into. The UDL and EL are spot on and the lesson plan would be great to focus on for a week! 6y
