The Tree Lady
The Tree Lady: The True Story of How One Tree-Loving Woman Changed a City Forever (with audio recording) | H. Joseph Hopkins
4 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
Unearth the true story of green-thumbed pioneer and activist Kate Sessions, who helped San Diego grow from a dry desert town into a lush, leafy city known for its gorgeous parks and gardens. Katherine Olivia Sessions never thought she’d live in a place without trees. After all, Kate grew up among the towering pines and redwoods of Northern California. But after becoming the first woman to graduate from the University of California with a degree in science, she took a job as a teacher far south in the dry desert town of San Diego. Where there were almost no trees. Kate decided that San Diego needed trees more than anything else. So this trailblazing young woman singlehandedly started a massive movement that transformed the town into the green, garden-filled oasis it is today. Now, more than 100 years after Kate first arrived in San Diego, her gorgeous gardens and parks can be found all over the city. Part fascinating biography, part inspirational story, this moving picture book about following your dreams, using your talents, and staying strong in the face of adversity is sure to resonate with readers young and old.

This #picturebook biography of #KateSessions highlights her pioneering work in planting trees —and encouraging tree planting— in #SanDiegoCA. The illustrations by #JillMcElmurry are lovely.

ncsufoxes I might need to find this one. We live in San Diego. In the Pacific Beach area of San Diego there is a Kate Sessions Elementary school & park (it‘s a huge park with beautiful views). 3y
BookishMarginalia @ncsufoxes It‘s a lovely book about a lovely woman, and it reinforces the importance of persistence. 3y

" keep missed studying science it was not sure she would say on the job. But for two years, she did."

I find it interesting that there is a book about something very specific such as the woman who changed San Diego's landscapes.

I felt like this was an interesting book because I do not think that many children know who Kate Sessions is. I definitely did not. Kate Session is a woman who helped make San Diego from a dessert to a lush, leafy city. This book would be great for children who are really into the environment or are from San Diego! I really enjoyed the pictures and the language of this book.
