The Infernal Battalion
The Infernal Battalion | Django Wexler
6 posts | 5 read
Military might and arcane power clash in Django Wexler’s thrilling new Shadow Campaigns novel. The Beast, the ancient demon imprisoned beneath the fortress-city of Elysium for a thousand years, has been loosed on the world. It absorbs mind after mind, spreading like a plague through the north. The fell army it has raised threatens the heart of Vordan, and it is under the command of the Beast’s greatest prize: legendary general Janus bet Vhalnich. As Queen Raesinia Orboan and soldiers Marcus D’Ivoire and Winter Ihernglass grapple with the aftermath of a hard-fought military campaign, they soon discover a betrayal they never could have foreseen. The news arrives like a thunderbolt: Janus has declared himself the rightful Emperor of Vordan. Chaos grips the city as officers and regiments are forced to declare for queen or emperor. Raesinia must struggle to keep her country under control and risks becoming everything she fought against. Marcus must take the field against his old commander, a man who has seemed an unbeatable strategist. And as Winter recovers from her injuries and mourns her losses, she knows the demon she carries inside her might be the only thing standing between the Beast and the destruction of everything in its path....

June was totally my month of #audiogaming as it is the annual grindfest event for one of my games. I managed to finish the entire Shadow Campaign series which I thoroughly enjoyed. What I did not managed to do was read my BookSpin selections so that will have to carry over into July.

4 audio
I also did not make any progress on my #BuriedAliveChallenge as most were library books.

As the conclusion of a five book arc I felt the ending was pretty satisfying. We see just how far the characters have come over the events of the story and the resolution seemed fitting. I think Jane got a little hard done by but in general I was happy with how things played out. Will definitely look for more by this author in future.

Overall I found this series quite a lot of fun. One of the POV characters was more than a little frustrating but, at that, neither the story nor the other characters let him off the hook. I thought this last book made a pretty satisfying conclusion.

A satisfying conclusion to one of my all-time favourite series. The excitement did not let up for a second and I am in awe of how Wexler managed to fit so much into this book without messing up the pacing. The ending felt a little rushed but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

Overall rating: 4.8/5

[Spoiler] The short snippet at the end about what Janus was getting upto makes me DESPERATE for a book/series focusing on that. He is my fav char after all.
