Burning Bright | Melissa Scott
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Governed by two political rulers, the planet Burning Bright is the location of the biggest virtual reality game in the universe. Quinn Lioe is tangled in a web of love and suspense when she becomes determined to play at the center of the virtual reality world and gets stuck in the war between the two empires. This science fiction adventure is one of Scott's best and the complex futuristic world is unforgettable.

Pickpick

Y‘all, I‘d be shocked to learn Ellen Kushner‘s SWORDSPOINT wasn‘t an influence on BURNING BRIGHT. The parallels leap out throughout this twisty-turny tale of queer folks roped into a political scheme-fest, but BURNING BRIGHT is also very much its own thing. Scott concerns herself with gaming and info tech; with what art might look like in the distant future; with change when stasis can no longer satisfy. It‘s a slow read but a damned good one. ⬇️

xicanti I think gamers are liable to enjoy it even more than I did, too, for its 1993 projection of how RPGs and computer gaming feed on one another. I got a kick out of the trappings, but I know I‘m missing a lot of cool references thanks to my non-gamer status.

(Also, the awful cover makes a bit more sense once you know the lady dressed as Glinda is actually an enormous puppet.)

TobeyTheScavengerMonk See that cover (and that FONT) just scream “TOBEY! BUY ME FOR LESS THAN 3 DOLLARS AT A USED BOOK STORE!” 5y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I myself shelled out $1.50 for it at the thrift store (on half price day; hardcovers are usually $3). There was an ebook edition released a few years ago, with a less garish cover, but it looks like its gone out of print again. Sadness. 5y

It‘s #bookandbeer time! I started BURNING BRIGHT about six months ago and drifted away from it for no good reason. Now I‘m gonna see if I can sink back in.

The beer is The Last Strawberry by Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks out of Richmond, BC, and it‘s quite tasty despite its headless state. It‘s like a fruit beer and a regular beer had a delicious baby; ie, it tastes a bit like kombucha but not a LOT like kombucha, as your average fruit beer does.

xicanti Here‘s a fruit beer/kombucha story! In December I was at a thing where we sampled a bunch of beers, and the host pulled out this watermelon sour someone gave him. Everyone else started screaming when they sipped their glasses because they were so grossed out. I tried mine, declared it tasted just like kombucha, and got the whole bottle to myself. Also! Fun fact: fruit beers COST LESS than kombucha. Yeah. For real. 5y
batsy I can't get over how delightful that beer can is! 5y
xicanti @batsy the beer‘s been on my radar for months because of the cute can. I‘m glad I finally tried it! 5y

I had EPIC PLANS to sink into this baroque SF offering while I drank a peppermint mocha, but the coffee was cool enough to drink quickly so I only got through a couple of pages before it was time to move along.

My trip prep took me to the thrift store, where I found BURNING BRIGHT by Melissa Scott and a super-cool WICKED shirt for $3.50 total. It's not obvious in the photo, but both Elphaba and Glinda are stitched on, not printed.

2BR02B Nice thrift finds! 6y
xicanti @2BR02B I'm so happy I found the shirt. The book's one of my favourites, and I saw the musical a few years back but passed on all the expensive merch. 6y
