Chasing King's Killer: The Hunt for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Assassin
Chasing King's Killer: The Hunt for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Assassin | James L. Swanson
11 posts | 10 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
In his meteoric, thirteen-year rise to fame, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a mass movement for Civil Rights -- with his relentless peaceful, non-violent protests, public demonstrations, and eloquent speeches. But as violent threats cast a dark shadow over Dr. King's life, Swanson hones in on James Earl Ray, a bizarre, racist, prison escapee who tragically ends King's life. As he did in his bestselling Scholastic MG/YA books Chasing LIncoln's Killer and "THE PRESIDENT HAS BEEN SHOT!", Swanson transports readers back to one of the most shocking, sad, and terrifying events in American history. Over 80 photographs, captions, bibliography, various source notes, and index included.

This is a YA book that shares an overview of the civil rights movement with special attention to the role of Martin Luther King Jr and the circumstances of his murder. If there‘s a teen in your life who doesn‘t know much about the history of the civil rights movement but should, this book is great. It has the right amount of detail for that audience and lots of photos to help the story come alive.

Such a good nonfiction read! I‘m trying to expand my nonfiction repertoire and this one did not disappoint! It told the story of MLK Jr‘s assassination from his upbringing to the chase to find his killer. Awesome pictures and infographics... I definitely am sharing this one with my students this year!

My kids both chose an MLK book for their bedtime stories tonight. ❤️❤️

This is a book for middle grade and I read it on audio. I thought it was well done. The author gives a lot of background on MLK, as well as some on James Earl Ray. We also get a full detailing of the assassination, as well as Ray‘s two months on the lam following it. I‘ve seen a lot of reviews that are harsh on the redundancy of this book, but I found it perfect for the age.

Mdargusch Heavy reading. 5y

This is a wonderfully-researched and amazingly told piece of non-fiction. For YA audiences, this is a gripping recount of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s initial brush with death, his senseless assassination, and details about his ruthless killer and how he pulled off the crime. While giving page time to describe King‘s killer, the book doesn‘t take the spotlight away from the remarkable man that King was. I am really enjoying the audio!

Wow! A well-researched, well-written nonfiction account of the life and assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. The #audiobook has a great narrator and the book has timelines and photographs and more info in the back. #nonfiction #history

Reviewsbylola I‘ll have to add this to my stack to get to eventually. I just read Redemption and a year or two I read a great account of the assassination 6y

My reason for reading this book was the fact that I was attending the Junior League of Richmond‘s Author dinner and the author was discussing this book. It was a fast read and didn‘t really offer any new information or facts that haven‘t been mentioned before. It felt superficial and lacked any in-depth theories about the event.

Now this one on the other hand, a solid nope. I'll have more up on #goodreads in a bit.
