When Cole Harper is compelled to return to Wounded Sky First Nation, he finds his community in chaos: a series of shocking murders, a mysterious illness ravaging the residents, and reemerging questions about Coles role in the tragedy that drove him away 10 years ago. With the aid of an unhelpful spirit, a disfigured ghost, and his two oldest friends, Cole tries to figure out his purpose, and unravel the mysteries he left behind a decade ago. Will he find the answers in time to save his community? Strangers is the first novel in The Reckoner series by David Alexander Robertson, awardwinning writer, and author of HighWater Press acclaimed childrens book When We Were Alone.

Mehso-so

I wanted to like this but it fell so flat. I'm kinda heartbroken since its own voices Indigenous and the series has wonderful covers

LiteraryinLawrence I love the tiny face lurking in the background. 😋 4y

#2019Book39
The idea behind this YA novel was interesting and the use of mythology strengthened it a bit. Overall, however, the execution was lacking. Nothing was explored deeply enough, so the characters were all pretty shallow and the action somehow seemed rushed while simultaneously dragging. The “magic” involved also didn‘t really appear to have any rules, so it only popped up when it was convenient for the plot.

11-year-old Me would've become obsessed with this book. It's packed with enduring friendships, interesting family dynamics, high stakes murder stuff, familiar Winnipeg sights, superheroic powers with traditional roots, teenagers who think homophobia is ridiculous, and anxiety rep, and the whole thing's overseen by a Trickster who can't resist the urge to break the fourth wall now and then.

The mystery's got some holes, but I can live with that.

I like the songs-as-chapter-titles thing Robertson's got going on.

Really enjoyed this YA supernatural murder-mystery story! Loved the indigenous character representation and the nod to folklore! Also, that cover! 😍
