Yep, I‘m a Wolff fan. Elliptical prose, telling AROUND the story, nesting tales like Carver or Bolaño. Odd, isolated characters. Power struggles: mother/daught, teacher/student, wife/husb, salesman/buyer. Clichés. Distance. “it struck me that the banal is sometimes what‘s most true.” Quiet violence. “There are times when you manage to apply the exact amount of force required to get what you want.” “Sour grapes covets all.” Solid translation, 2016.

Taylor I still think about this book…. 2y
Pinta @taylor Yep, a back-of-the-brain book. A haunter. 2y

#uklittens who have #scribd if your interested in #womenintranslation it has a rather large selection of books for you. Including the tagged book which looks amazing! The only problem is is doesn't say when a book is translated so you kinda have to know what you're looking for. I've been working from this great resource

Hope it helps someone

Not officially doing #readathon but I finished Bret Easton Ellis and Other Dogs this morning. The story of a girl learning about a writer who lived in her building from the stories of other people and finding out what life is all about.

"That was the way we were going to live. Full on, flat out and no teasing the brakes. Wholeheartedly. Otherwise why bother? We would live life even if it killed us."

This translation caught my eye online and it did not disappoint. Filled with strong feminism and class considerations, it's a story both sad and compelling, written in sentences that feel magical, making the reading experience sail by. Ultimately this novel reminded me how good literature can be.

"Some people just shut their eyes and sat there with the sun in their faces, their entire being dissolving into the ice cream."

Isn't that how it is when you see people eating ice cream?!

This book is marvelous so far.
