IT'S A GAME OF ASSASSIN VERSUS ASSASSIN Girton Club-foot has no family, a crippled leg, and is apprenticed to the best assassin in the land. He's learning the art of taking lives, but his latest mission tasks him with a far more difficult challenge: to save a life. Someone is trying to kill the heir to the throne, and it is up to Girton to uncover the traitor and prevent the prince's murder. Age of Assassins is the first in an epic new trilogy set in a world ravaged by magic, featuring a cast of assassins, knights, ambitious noblemen, and fools.

Club-foot is an apprentice assassin. You see his abilities early on. He & his master have been hired to stop a possible assassination. They are assassin spies. Club-foot is a young teenager & has to endure a lot of hardship in order to remain undercover while pretending to learn how to fight. I really enjoyed this book and have picked up the sequels. Easy fun read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Going back through my books to write up my finalized list, and I guess I missed this one. Reading back through the description because I had no memory of it whatsoever— turns out that I read it, but it was not noteworthy enough! I remember some of it now, and I didn‘t dislike it, but I didn‘t like it enough to read the next book in the series. So, maybe 6.5/10 I guess?

This was 100% Not My Thing but also required reading, so I had to finish it. This hasn't made me more positive about it.

I found this book rather more by the numbers than its reputation had led me to expect, and the most original aspect of its world-building introduced a new checkbox in my list of Things I Do Not Wish To Read About.

Don't get me wrong - it's not a bad book. I see why other people like it. But I hated it.

Lucy_Anywhere I found it a bit meh. I mean, it wasn't terrible but I've read a lot better... Have you read Assassin's Apprentice? 5y
imyril @Lucy_Anywhere I have. Thinking about it, I hated that too so maybe I just don't like books about assassins 😂 5y

R J Baker‘s debut fantasy novel (the first in a trilogy) is a confident affair that neatly sets up world building and character dynamics and has interesting relationships between Girton, Merela and Rufra but the mystery is too easy to guess, some of the characters (notably Aydor but also Drusl) are two-dimensional and although I liked the idea of a club-footed assassin, a plot device compensated for (and ultimately negates) it.

imyril I wholeheartedly agree with your criticisms. Oh So Mysterious Merela is so clever and all-knowing except for the Two Crucial Plot points that fly past her. 5y
IReadThereforeIBlog Thanks. Unfortunately it‘s a common problem in debuts but it wouldn‘t put me off reading the sequel. 🙂 5y

What a wonderful first instalment in this trilogy. To catch an assassin use an assassin. This has elements of YA, and the first book is quite light and deals with YA themes. The two sequels, however, move away from that and the world becomes darker as does the protagonist. The world building is super interesting, and I really enjoyed the author‘s voice. The protagonist is disabled, which is dealt with in an extremely kick-ass way! 💪 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Excellent! I love finding a new series; I can't wait to read the next one (Blood of Assassins). The character of Girton is extra fine--his disability doesn't define him, and isn't even remarked on that much, nor does it prevent him from doing what needs doing. I also enjoyed the casual equality--some soldiers were male, some female; some people preferred the company of their own gender; neither was, again remarked on; that was just how it was.

I know I'm doing this in the wrong order 😂 but I was wondering if anyone has read Age of Assassins and if so what they thought? I'm mid series but think I'll start this on the side! #fantasy #assassins #geek

It was a good read. Good pacing and plot. I think the author could have made it more exciting in certain parts but overall it was enjoyable.
