American Radical
American Radical: Inside the World of an Undercover Muslim FBI Agent | Kevin Maurer, Tamer Elnoury
7 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
The explosive memoir of a Muslim American FBI agent fighting terror from the inside. Its no secret that federal agencies are waging a broad, global war against terror. But for the first time in this memoir, an active Muslim American federal agent reveals his experience infiltrating and bringing down a terror cell in North America. A longtime undercover agent, Tamer Elnoury joined an elite counterterrorism unit after September 11. Its express purpose is to gain the trust of terrorists whose goals are to take out as many Americans in as public and as devastating a way possible. It's a furious race against the clock for Tamer and his unit to stop them before they can implement their plans. Yet as new as this war still is, the techniques are as old as time: listen, record, and prove terrorist intent. Due to his ongoing work for the FBI, Elnoury writes under a pseudonym. An Arabic-speaking Muslim American, a patriot, a hero: To many Americans, it will be a revelation that he and his team even exist, let alone the vital and dangerous work they do keeping all Americans safe.

Both from the epilogue:

“I believe there should be a strict vetting process; but our world becomes more dangerous when we shut our doors to immigrants.“

“Keeping America's doors open ensures that when we are threatened by an enemy, we will always have someone who looks like them to help defeat them. Our best defense is inclusion. America is everyone.“

I wish more people understood this.

⭐⭐⭐ Better-written than Black Klansman (another undercover operation memoir). I'm glad I read this (and BK) if for no other reason than to get a better understanding what we're up against.

Interesting book that very well conveys the difficulties of being an undercover agent. It reads very easily, Tamer Elnoury speaks openly of his work, his life, and his religion. Despite moments I found a bit too long, I'm glad I read it, because I got to learn things (always something positive for me).

A memoir of an undercover FBI agent who infiltrated a terrorist cell seeking to blow up a rail bridge. I originally picked this up after hearing the agent interviewed on a podcast I listned to and found him interesting. At times, like the work, a bit repetitive, but an interesting read. He takes great pains to remind the reader that the jihadists' views are a perversion of Islam.

Finally digging into this after having it on the kindle for over a year. So far it‘s an engrossing (if elementarily written) read!

This book was fascinating! It read like a thriller at times, but unfortunately is nonfiction. I was so impressed with Tamer and his work as an undercover FBI agent. #audio
