#1 international bestselling author of Thirteen Reasons Why Jay Asher and co-author Jessica Freeburg brilliantly reimagine the classic Pied Piper legend as a powerful graphic novel about loneliness, love, and vengeance. Fans of Neil Gaiman and Through the Woods by Emily Carroll will devour this eerie, atmospheric retelling. A moving graphic novel about isolation, love, and retribution, this dark version of a familiar tale will remain with readers long after the last page is turned.School Library Journal Long ago, in a small village in the middle of a deep, dark forest, there lived a lonely, deaf girl named Maggie. Shunned by her village because of her disability, her only comfort comes from her vivid imagination. Maggie has a gift for inventing stories and dreams of one day finding her fairy-tale love. When Maggie meets the mysterious Piper, it seems that all her wishes are coming true. Spellbound, Maggie falls hard for him and plunges headfirst into his magical world. But as she grows closer to the Piper, Maggie discovers that he has a dark side. The boy of Maggies dreams might just turn out to be her worst nightmare With striking illustrations from Eisner-nominated artist Jeff Stokely, mixed with Jessica Freeburg's work on historic and legendary horrors, Piper is an exciting new departure for Jay Asher that deftly touches on the same themes of truth, guilt, and redemption that made Thirteen Reasons Why a beloved bestseller.

I did like this story, but it wasn‘t as dark as I had anticipated. I think my dark meter for YA must be off because I was expecting some seriously sinister twist and this story played out the way I thought it would. The illustrations are gorgeous and the use of color sets the tone well for many of the panels. Glad I read this #graphicnovel, but I‘m equally glad that I borrowed it from my local library.

This is one of those times where I think the story would have been really good in regular book format. As a graphic novel Piper felt kind of rushed. I tend to like retellings though I have to say this is the first one I've read that was a retelling of the story of the Pied Piper. I did like that in this story it showed what made Piper do the things he did in the end and the kinder side of him when he is with the character Maggie.

This is another take on the Pied Piper story. The story was good though only attraction was the graphics and the bittersweet ending. On one hand I hated the guy, on the other I understood him as well. It is a quick read, worth a try.

This book looked so interesting when I read the synopsis, but I was sadly disappointed. It was really short, really confusing, and felt kind of rushed. Then again, graphic novels are an entirely different way of telling stories than regular novels, so part of this may have come from my lack of experience with this format. Also, I don‘t know the original story of the Pied Piper 😬 Maybe this is for some people, but not for me.

I liked this take on the Pied Piper story, just wished it was longer. The end felt very rushed and seemed to jump a bit like pages were missing?

🔥 #ThisRemindsMeOf this graphic-novel Pied Piper retelling.

I'm not familiar with the legend, so I can't say how this book compares. It's a quick, entertaining read—I read it all during the Super Bowl—but there were a couple moments I wished for a little more detail to better explain aspects of the story. #ReadHarder

I decided to put the game on, but I made sure to have a stack of books nearby, too. I think I'm set for a pretty good night. Go Patriots!
