Things to Do When It's Raining
Things to Do When It's Raining | Marissa Stapley
11 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
Two families, three generations and a lie that almost destroys them. Is their love strong enough to heal old wounds? Mae Summers and Gabe Broadbent grew up together in the idyllic Summers Inn, perched at the edge of the St. Lawrence River. Mae was orphaned at the age of six and Gabe needed protection from his alcoholic father, so both were raised under one roof by Maes grandparents, Lilly and George. Their childhood friendship quickly developed into a first lovea love that was suddenly broken by Gabes unexpected departure. Mae grew up, got over her heartbreak and started a life for herself in New York City. After more than a decade, Mae and Gabe find themselves pulled back to Alexandria Bay. Hoping to find solace within the Summers Inn, Mae instead finds her grandparents in the midst of decline with their past unraveling around her. A lifetime of secrets stands in the way of this unconventional familys happiness. Will they be able to reclaim the past and come together, or will they remain separate islands? From the bestselling author of Mating for Life comes a powerful story about guilt, forgiveness and the truth about families: that we can choose them, just as we choose to love.

I grabbed this book because the cover referenced like it was like Nicholas Sparks. I read a ton of Sparks book sin my 20s and really enjoyed them. This one jumped around a lot I felt between different characters narrating. I don‘t know what it was about these books I have picked lately that jump around. I did enjoy the book but kept losing my way while reading. The story between Mae and Gabe was wonderful.

My plans for today as it's raining are:
1. Finish The Pity of War by Niall Ferguson
2. Finish Six Tudor Queens: Anne Boleyn A King's Obsession by Alison Weir
3. Start The Blessed Child by Rosie Goodwin

Easy summer read about Mae who goes back to her family‘s inn and to the past secrets that her family has. Good quick read. The author puts a suggestion of what to do on a rainy day after each chapter🌝☔️

I‘m lying in bed with a sick kitty so this is a stock image but my favorite place/time to read is in the late fall or early spring when it‘s raining all the time. I have a small covered patio off my bedroom with a tree and a chair. I love to sit there, wrapped in my old quilt, drinking tea and reading. I love the chill and the goosebumps, and the quiet it creates. It‘s something my mom and I used to do when I was young. #SpringCleaningGiveaway

It doesn‘t rain a lot where I live but that didn‘t stop me from recently finishing my second audiobook of the year, Things to Do When It‘s Raining by Marissa Stapley. This was an easy “read” (or listen) and I flew through it pretty quickly. It is a heartwarming tale that is good for those looking for an easy escape, beach-read type novel. #audiobook #romance #bookworm #bookaddict #booknerd #readharder #beachreads #lindseytailoredreads #bibliophile

Stapley's latest is a story about love, loss, forgiveness, and truth. Families are complicated, this book doesn't shy away from family drama/complex relationships.
Sometimes when a narrative incorporates both the past & present, it can be cumbersome, particularly if the reader has connected with one storyline over the other. In this case, this type of narrative works. My only criticism was that the ending felt rushed.

This is the story of Mae and Gabe who grew up together in Alexandria Bay at Mae's grandparents' summer inn. During their teenage years, they became separated due to events beyond their control. Many years later, fate brings them back to Alexandria Bay and you will want to read this novel to discover all the secrets and mysteries that could again keep Mae and Gabe apart. This is a love story with much drama and suspense.
