On Imagination | Mary Ruefle
4 posts | 2 read
"It is impossible for me to write about the imagination; it is like asking a fish to describe the sea," Mary Ruefle announces at the start of her essay. With wit and intellectual abandon, Ruefle draws inspiration from Wittgenstein, Shakespeare, Jesus, Steve Jobs, Johnny Cash, and Emily Dickson to explore her subject. The chapbook features original interior illustrations. Mary Ruefle is the author of numerous volumes of poetry and prose, including Madness, Rack, and Honey: Collected Lectures, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, and Selected Poems, winner of the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America.

1. I do not remember my dreams. I can only hope that I am experiencing fantastic adventures or soulful transcending journeys of growth.

2. A dragon named Eowyn.

3. Many of you know that I love Samwise "Sam" Gamgee from LOTR. He would be my best friend choice.

4. There are so many wonderful literary worlds/places out there. I don‘t think I could choose just one, but top-ranking: The Shire, Diagon Alley....hmm

5. Right on!

And you'll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look
And you'll see
Into your imagination... 🌈

On Imagination | Mary Ruefle

I want to remind you that it is imagination that kicks in every morning when you wake & every night when you go to sleep & tells you that you are safe & all your loved ones are safe & all your belongings really do belong to you & are safe as you are safe.

Of course you are not safe nor is anyone you know safe & nothing really belongs to you, not forever, your most beloved keepsake will one day belong to another.
